Preparing Public Health Professionals in a Changing World

Principal support for the PHTC is provided through a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration, DHHS.

Launched in 2000, POPHTC is based in the Center for Public Health Practice at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, and partners with the Office of Workforce Development, The Ohio State University School of Public Health.

The goal of POPHTC, as one of the public health training centers is to "improve the nation's public health systems by strengthening the technical, scientific, managerial, and leadership competencies and capabilities of the current and future public health workforce."

Public Health 101 On-line is a free Continuing Education accredited introduction to the field of Public Health. Environmental Education For The Nursing Workforce
This contains a list of free environmental health training resources. Resources include Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) environmental health case studies with free CME, CNE and CE’s. The resources, all available on-line, address a variety of public health competencies, as well as the basic competencies recommended for all nurses in the 1995 IOM Report “Nursing, Health and the Environment: Strengthening Relationships to Improve the Public’s Health.”

Grant Proposal Writing
This course introduces the basic components of a grant proposal, focusing on how to establish credibility, convey need, clearly define objectives and methods, and construct a budget that supports the narrative. In addition, it describes the underlying intent and nature of proposals and how to prepare cover letters and addendum materials. – Brian A. Methamphetamine
This course describes what methamphetamine is, the hazards of using it, and the effects that its use and production have on children, public health workers and the environment. Also described are treatment options and ways to curtail use and production. – Kathleen Fadgen, MPH, BSN, RN.

The Role of School Nurses in Wellness
School nurses have the knowledge and clinical experience to assist their school districts in constructing a wellness program. The Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 was established to promote healthy nutrition and physical activity in schools starting in July 2006. The Role of School Nurses in Wellness presents the details of the federally-mandated school wellness policies and how school nurses can play a major role in their implementation. – Kathleen Fadgen, MPH, BSN, RN.

FREE Online Education and Training Opportunities

The Pennsylvania Department of Health (PA DOH) is committed to a prepared workforce as an essential component in strengthening the Commonwealth’s public health system and enhancing our ability to respond to incidents of bioterrorism, outbreaks of infectious disease, and other public health threats and emergencies. To this end, the PA Prepared Learning Management System (LMS) contains courses and content from national and state experts regarding issues of public health preparedness. Benefits to you include: (1) Access to the LMS 24 hours per day 7 days per week; (2) Access to LMS via any computer with Internet access at; (3) Access to the most current information available at the time.

In collaboration with PA DOH, the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health Center for Public Health Practice is pleased to announce the availability of FREE continuing education opportunities for a multitude of materials on LMS. Some have been accredited for Continuing Medical Education; some for Continuing Nursing Education; and others have received generally recognized Continuing Education Units. There are still other items which have been accredited by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice and other credentialing authorities.

To determine the specific accreditation an item carries on LMS, just select a title and click on the “Read Me First.” You will be able to quickly determine whether the course objectives are relevant for you as well as the type and number of credits associated with the course.
